To knot fringe evenly, use 6 warp ends, make a loop, pull warp ends thru loop, slip loop up against header, then tighten knot. Knotting goes easier if you are working with fringe at least 5 inches long. Use a crochet hook to pull ends thru easily.

January 22-28, 2001
Glue first row of header to keep it from slipping down when you cut rug off loom. It keeps header neat until tied. Use glue that will dry flexible, not yellow, and if it washes out with first washing it's O. K. It's purpose is to help you tie headers with ease. Sobo glue works well. Buy from any fabric store.

Headers on rugs :: Wind double warp ends (reel off 2 warp tubes) onto shuttle. Tie the two ends on crossbar of shuttle and wind on 10 rows, enough for a one inch header at the start of the rug. Repeat at the end of rug. Use matching or contrasting warp.

November 3 - 9, 2000
Another use for vinyl blind slats: When putting a second rug on in a row, use vinyl blind slats as spacers to keep 2nd rug from sinking in to first by slipping blinds in one at a time as you wind work forward. It also keeps warp from slipping off edge of previous rug, if the new one is slightly narror, due to different fabric uses. Some draw in more than others.

Spacers :: When putting a second rug (or 3rd or 4th) on behind the first, do you need spacers in between? A convenient kind are made from venetian blinds. Cut blind apart and use the 1 inch slates as spacers. The vinyl slates work well and can be cut to the right length with scissors. Cut to leave about 2 inches extra on each side of rug. Cut 18 inches long for use in weaving table runners and placemats.

Warping :: When putting on a new warp, duct tape can be a big help. Tape your beginning ends of warp to the section you are warping to hold them fast. They won't come loose as you begin to wind on. Also when you are done winding that section, use two pieces of tape on warp 1 inch apart and cut in between the tapes. One gets taped down to wound section and the other gets taped to next section to be wound on. Keep doing this through the last section.

Noisey Warning :: When you use a counter consisting of a threaded bolt and metal drop piece that falls off when you have reached the end of the bolt, it's easy to miss hearing it drop to the floor if you have carpeting. Place a tinfoil pie plate on the floor where the metal drop falls and it will clatter loudly when it hits the pie pan. You won't miss hearing it, and will know when to stop turning warp beam.

Do you want to hang rugs for display, but can't find hangers big enough? Make your own! Cut 1 inch PVC pipe (plumbing pipe) 30 inches long. Cut clothes line rope around 50 inches long. Feed through pipe and knot ends together. Take wire hanger and cut off to leave the hook-neck part plus 2 inches. Bend up cut edges -- pinch together enough to hold knotted clothes line. It makes a nice strong, flexible hanger!
